All-Clad Metalcrafters was founded in 1960 by John Ulam, who was awarded over 50 U.S. patents related to bonded metals. Ulam was instrumental in the U.S. Mint's conversion from solid silver coins to today's bonded layered metals. An accomplished metallurgist, Ulam found that combining dissimilar metals in proper formulations delivered properties no other metals could achieve individually. He formed an alliance with Alcoa in 1967 and they adapted his bonding technology to make cookware which exceeded the performance of non-bonded cookware.

In 1971, All-Clad Metalcrafters was established and began producing professional-quality bonded cookware for professional and gourmet home cooks. The All-Clad brand was noted by the professional community as having extraordinary qualities, aesthetics and cooking performance. All-Clad’s products are manufactured in the U.S.A. with the exception of its accessories, lids, and electrical appliances, which, according to its website, are manufactured by "select partners overseas qualified carefully by All-Clad with highest quality."

All-Clad uses raw materials. Its metallurgists specify the metals formulations' chemical composition and microstructure. The metals are formulated for optimal performance. All- Clad bonded cookware is made according to stringent environmental standards. Its website boasts that virtually "every ounce of unused material is recovered and recycled, down to the metal dust during the sand process."

As some of its components are manufactured overseas, All-Clad claims a strict policy of working with suppliers who are in compliance with applicable environmental standards. All such items are subject to U.S. Food & Drug Administration testing and "stringent third party testing to ensure products are free of lead or any other contaminants."
