Amazon is an online retail outlet whose principal products are books, CDs, DVDs and other media. Since its simple 1995 beginnings by founder Jeff Bezos, the company has diversified from the world's biggest online bookstore to "a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online." Through its own warehouses and a wide number of merchant relationships, Amazon sells a huge variety of products, from groceries to electronics to baby goods.

Recently, Amazon's innovation has been its electronic book reader, the Kindle. Its second-generation device, the Kindle 2, was announced February 9, 2009, at a price of $359.

Notable Eco Activity

In November 2008, Amazon launched a "frustration-free packaging initiative" to reduce the packaging around both its media offerings and third-party fulfillment. For instance, the company had previously set a book on a cardboard backing, wrapped it in plastic, and then inserted it into a box surrounded by plastic air-filled packaging, and would now ship the item alone in a plain brown box. Additionally, toys that are sold in bricks-and-mortar retail establishments wrapped in hard plastic packages will be sold in cardboard boxes with the small parts in a bag, instead of wired to the box base for display purposes.

In August 2008, Amazon introduced its "Amazon Green" section, in which green products are featured and ranked. In the top 10: the Amazon Kindle, which theoretically saves trees by allowing consumers to read books without paper.
