Amnesty International

Amnesty International is a worldwide campaign to recognize all people's human rights. It has over 2.2 million members and subscribers in over 150 countries and regions and it coordinates and supports a wide range of issues. Amnesty International has provided leadership and stewardship throughout the world to stop the abuse of human rights sice 1961. It began when two Portugese students were sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for raising a toast to freedom. This horrified British lawyer Peter Benenson. He wrote to the British newpspaper, "The Observer", calling for an international campaign to bombard authorities about the "forgotten prisoners". This launched a year long campaign calling on people to protest against the imprisonment of people for their political or religious beliefs.

Among its many services, Amnesty International sends experts to talk with victims, oversee trials, coordinate with local human rights activists, monitor global and local media, and publicize human rights violations. They help stop human rights abuses by mobilizing the public by putting pressure on governments, armed political groups, companies and intergovernmental bodies through public demonstrations, vigils, letter writing campaigns, lobbying, petitions, and other online actions.

Amnesty International's research teams investigate reports of human rights abuses by corroborating the information via a variety of sources and contacts. The teams may receive information from prisoners, their representatives, survivors of abuse and their families, lawyers, journalists, refugees, diplomats, religious organizations, and other human rights organizations.
