Better Place

Better Place, a privately held company, was formed in 2007 by Shai Agassi. Agassi describes Better Place as "the AT&T for electric cars." They don't make the cars but they make the network that will make EVs affordable and convenient. They implement the transportation electricity grid providing locations where you charge your EV and exchange your batteries. Better Place has business deals with Denmark, Israel, Australia, and Hawaii. Feeding the recharging network in each country is a combination of alternative energy sources including solar and wind power generators.

In order for the recharging/battery swapping network model to be viable, the company needs automobile makers making electric cars. To that end they have developed relationships with Nissan and Renault and expect to see at least twelve different EV models available beginning in 2010.

They expect to sell electricity by subscription service, much like a cell phone provider, as well as selling recharging at convenient recharge points on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Notable Eco Activity

The company is poised to create a paradigm shift in personal transportation. In partnership with EV manufacturers and working with governments around the globe, Better Place will soon roll out an alternative energy infrastructure supplying EVs with electricity through charging stations and through battery swaps.
