Bicycle for a Day

Bicycle for a Day is both an event and a non-profit founded by Matthew Modine to promote bicycling instead of driving as a way "to help empower individuals with tools which they can use in their every day lives to improve and repair our environment and personal health." The event, which is billed as the "first" but is currently the only one scheduled, took place on September 20, 2008 in New York City. The star-studded event in the South Street Seaport attracted between 10,000 and 14,000 attendees, although the number of bike riders was not released. In order to make the event more New Yorker-friendly, attendees were encouraged to bike or "skate, or put on some sneakers and jog."

Next steps for the company are unclear, but the press releases leading up to the event indicated that Bicycle for a Day "supports international organizations that help preserve and restore our environment, as well as, local charities that make biking in cities safer and more accessible. The mission of BFAD is to inspire and inform individuals about simple actions to practice in their everyday lives that -- done collectively -- can make a difference towards reducing global warming."

Notable Eco Activity

The Bicycle for a Day event is famous chiefly for its celebrity founder, Matthew Modine, and its stable of celebrity spokespeople, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and musicians Josh Lukas and Ben Jelen. While Modine garnered a large amount of press leading up to the event, no long-lasting effects were publicized.
