Blue Ocean Institute

Founded in 2003 by Mercedes Lee and Carl Safina, the Blue Ocean Institute works to protect and improve habitat for all marine life, and particularly seafood species. The not-for-profit organization uses science, art, and literature to inspire a closer connection with the sea. Partnering with other conservation organizations, artists, chefs, academic experts, scientists, retailers, foundations and ocean enthusiasts, Blue Ocean Institute brings information together about the sustainability of species and delivers it right to the restaurant table via text message on its famous Fish Phone

The Institute has a staff of nine, including the two founders, scientists, writers, and program directors. Together they run nine programs, including:

Marine conservation. Blue Ocean institute works to raise awareness of the depleted stock of fish world-wide. Scientists predict that there will be no commercial stocks of fish by 2048 unless we address issues of sustainability now. Blue Ocean Institute's famous Fish Phone, won the 2008 Ideal Bite Best In Green award (Food category).
