Brown Cow

Brown Cow began making small batches of yogurt from a brown Jersey cow named "Lily" on a small family farm in Ithaca, New York, in 1983. The yogurt, revered for its layer of cream on top ("cream top yogurt") and its lack of artificial ingredients and flavorings, was popular and the yogurt company almost immediately shared its process with a dairy in Petaluma, California. In 1989, the Ford family bought Brown Cow Farm and moved it to Antioch, California.

In February, 2003, Stonyfield Farm acquired Brown Cow yogurt. The company continues to maintain its commitment to all-natural ingredients and using only milk from cows not treated with artificial hormones. However, the company now makes a number of low-fat products without the signature cream top.

The layer of cream on top is due to the use of milk that has not been homogenized; prior to the widespread addition of homogenization to dairy processing, all yogurt would have a layer of cream on top.

Notable Eco Activity

Brown Cow is famous for eschewing artificial ingredients and corn-based sweeteners, using fruit, maple syrup, and raw sugar to sweeten its products. In addition, the company has always used milk from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones or antibiotics. Brown Cow donates 10% of its profits annually to environmental protection causes.
