Conservation Fund

The Conservation Fund is a non-profit that works in the United States to protect wildlife habitats, land and water. In the company's history, it has protected six million acres, "sustaining wild havens, working lands and vibrant communities." Utilizing its "market-based conservation strategy," the Conservation Fund partners with government agencies, land trusts and other non-profits to acquire and conserve land. In addition, the organization sells carbon offsets, manages nonprofit forests, finances rural small businesses, provides land-use planning, trains environmental leaders, and operates a "mitigation bank" in the South. Among other partner organizations, the Conservation Fund manages the National Capital Investment Fund, which provides debt and equity financing to a wide range of environmental small businesses, including specialty food producers and biofuels manufacturers. Another program, the National Forum on Children and Nature, is dedicated to connecting kids and nature.

The Charity Navigator rates the Conservation Fund with four stars, its highest rating.

Notable Eco Activity

The Conservation Fund is unusual among non-profits in that it only spends 1% of its annual contributions on fundraising, and does not send labels, cards, or other promotional items to its current and potential givers. The organization has a "limited mailings" pledge, in which it promises to send only one annual fund request each year and a quarterly newsletter to those who support the nonprofit.

The Conservation Fund is a partner in the iPhorest iPhone app, a virtual and real tree planting program developed by iPhactory.
