Consumer Product Safety Commission

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from thousands of types of consumer products. The agency guards consumers against products that pose fire, electrical, chemical or mechanical hazards or could injure children. Some types of consumer products are covered by other federal agencies; for example, cars, trucks and motorcycles fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation, while food, drugs and cosmetics are covered by the Food and Drug Administration.

The CPSC's oversight of products from toys and cribs to power tools, cigarette lighters and household chemicals have contributed to what the agency says is a 30 percent decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

  • To report a safety problem with a product, contact the CPSC Hotline at 1-800-638-CPSC (-2772), e-mail the agency or visit the CPSC web site.
  •  View current product recalls at Recalls.gov.
