The first Costco warehouse was opened in 1983 in Seattle, Washington. Prior to opening as Costco, Sol Price started the company under the name "Price Club" in San Diego, California in 1976. By 1999, Costco had opened numerous warehouses around the world, including the United Kingdom, Taiwan and Seoul, Korea, and had renamed its company from Price-Costco to Costco Wholesale Corporation. The average warehouse generates $130 million in sales and Costco.com generates $1 billion in sales. It is the 5th largest retailer in the U.S. and 8th largest in the world. Fortune Magazine ranks Costco as number 29 on the Fortune 500.

Kirkland is Costco Corporation's "Signature" brand of numerous products, including foodstuffs, appliances, clothing, auto parts, and household goods.Their products are only available at Costco stores throughout the United States and Canada.

In addition to the Kirkland brands, Costco offers travel agency services, gasoline, Hearing Aid Centers, Optical Services, as well as personal and business credit services. It also offers discounted financial services to its members including mortgage equity lines, auto loans, and business and health insurance.

Notable Eco Activity

Costco has recently launched its line of Kirkland Signature environmentally friendly cleaning products, including laundry detergent, liquid dish soap and multipurpose cleaner. Its cleaning agents are plant based and contain no phosphates, dyes or bleaches and are not tested on animals. The company claims its manufacturing and distribution process is also eco friendly but provides no details.
