Method was founded by Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan, former roommates, who got the idea to start their own company after being exposed to toxic chemicals.

Eric Ryan, having spent seven years in advertising, working for Gap, Old Navy, and Saturn, used his expertise in fashion and design to develop innovative packaging for the products. Adam Lowry, who began his career in product design by inventing two U.S. patent-pending products for use in the auto industry, developed a set of formulas for household surface cleaners.

The company's motto is "people against dirty", which refers not only to cleaning up one's home or body, but cleaning up the way we clean.

Today, their product line includes all-purpose household cleaners, air care, baby care products, skin care, laundry detergents, floor care and specialty surface cleaners.

Notable Eco Activity

Method's products are made from non-toxic, biodegradable ingredients and contain no phthalates or parabens. Its product packaging meets the environmental design standards of Cradle to Cradle. It makes recyclable bottles from 100% recycled plastic packaging, and use bamboo, corn and coconut oil in its products and packaging. While the majority of its ingredients are from natural sources, some are synthetic when there are no safe, effective and environmentally sensitive natural alternative, such as color or preservatives. Those ingredients must pass a stringent review process and Method uses globally recognized environmental chemist, Michael Braungart, to ensure that those materials are safe. The ingredients must pass the EPA's Design for the Environment criteria.

In addition, the CO2 emissions from Method's employees' commutes and travel are offset with carbon credits and the energy used in its manufacturing site and office from renewable energy credits. Method never tests on animals.
