Under the banner of the World Wildlife Fund, South Africa (WWF), founded in 1968 by Dr. Anton Rupert, the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) was initiated in November, 2004 to inform and educate all participants in the seafood trade, from wholesalers to restaurateurs to seafood lovers about responsible seafood choices. It is committed to conserve the natural heritage of South Africa.
Among its many goals, SASSI is aimed at educating consumers about the need to conserve many seafood species which are being harvested at unsustainable rates and which may cause unacceptable damage to the oceans ecosystem with potentially serious long-term effects.
Notable Eco Activity
SASSI maintains consumer lists about which seafood species are legal and more sustainable choices from South African seafood populations. The list is categorized using a system of green, orange and red, with green being the best choices and red being illegal to sell in South Africa as they are over exploited or from problematic fisheries.
SASSI also works with restaurants, retailers, wholesalers and chefs to ensure that they serve sustainable seafood choices and encourage that they sign up as charter members, willing to comply with all applicable laws and as partners of SASSI.
Awards
SASSI recently won a Mail & Guardian Greening the Future Award.
