Weleda

Weleda was founded 1921 in the town of Arlesheim in Switzerland. It was an outgrowth of a pharmaceutical facility developed by the Dutch medical doctor Ita Wegman and Austrian philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner, to provide remedies and body care preparations. Weleda operates on all five continents with 1800 employees worldwide. For more than 85 years, Weleda has developed and sold complementary medicine, nutritional supplements and cosmetics. WELEDA was first registered as a trademark in 1923. Rudolf Steiner chose the name himself, for "Weledas" or "Velledas", the name given to Celtic women healers. These were wise women with deep knowledge of nature. All of Weleda’s remedies, were originally derived from nature. It’s founding principle and philosophy is to promote health by being "In harmony with nature and the human being." Weleda does not conduct or commission animal experiments, at either the research or quality testing level. Instead they rely on high quality proven ingredients. Weleda bases their products on raw materials grown to organic standards or gathered in a sustainable manner by establishing and cultivating a network of suppliers based on trust.

Most of Weleda products are packaged in recyclable glass bottles and aluminum tubes with inert resinous linings. Glass bottles are excellent for retaining product qualities. And the beauty of metal tubes is that upon squeezing the necessary amount, the tube contracts, keeping air out, thus making the product stay fresh longer. Since Weleda does not use synthetic preservatives, packaging methodology becomes very important.

Notable Eco Activity

Weleda's environmental manager Holger Biller said the company is working to become carbon neutral by reducing emissions and offsetting the carbon dioxide it produces.

"We have already established a water recycling programme in which the water from our production is used to water our gardens," said Biller. "Additionally, our new production facilities feature solar paneling for energy supply."
