The Environmental Protection Agency was established in 1970 with a mission to “protect human health and the environment.” The EPA was set up by the White House and Congress to respond to the demand from citizens of the United States for cleaner water, air and land. The EPA establishes guidelines to assist citizens make a cleaner environment a reality. This organization also contributes to the repair of damages that have already impacted our world.
The agency has been authorized by Congress to create and enforce laws and regulations applying to individuals, businesses, state and local governments in order to uphold the needs of our fragile and ever changing environment.
According to the EPAs website, www.epa.gov, they balance their scientific research activities across two broad categories: 1) problem-driven research and 2) core research. The goal of problem driven research is to solve current, high risk and high scientific uncertainty problems that effect our environment. While the purpose of core research is to "improve the underlying scientific foundation for understanding and protecting human health and the environment."
