GMO

A GMO, or Genetically Modified Organism, is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Examples of GMOs include animals such as mice, fish, many species of plants, fungi, and bacteria.  Uses are applicable in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and

GM crop plants have been developed for various purposes,  including 1) resistance to pests, herbicides or harsh environmental conditions, 2) improved product shelflife, and 3) increased nutritional value.

There is significant concern about the limitations of modern science to fully comprehend all of the potential negative ramifications of genetic manipulation.  In other words, we simply don't yet know the ultimate results of such genetic manipulation.  As such, many municipalities have banned the use of GM crops, but there are still concerns about cross-pollination.
