Asbestos

Asbestos is an incombustible, chemical-resistant, fibrous mineral form of impure magnesium silicate. This mineral has many useful properties like thermal insulation, chemical and thermal stability and high tensile strength. Often it is used as an acoustic insulator. Fire proofing and thermal insulation are other common uses of asbestos.

The use of asbestos in construction and building development became popular due to its heat, electrical and chemical damage resistance. However, asbestos has been found to have cancer causing properties. The main infiltration to humans affect the lungs along with other respiratory health issues. Because of these findings beginning in the 1980s several countries have banned the use of asbestos in the building process.

Natural Occurring Asbestos (NOA) comes from natural geologic deposits. The health risks associated with exposure to NOA are not understood at this time.
