Attachment parenting (AP), a term coined by pediatrician Dr. William Sears, is a natural parenting philosophy focused on strong parent/child bonding. It emphasizes parenting strategies that help solidify this bond, both emotionally and physically. Sears lays out seven "Baby B's" that promote this process:
- Birth bonding
- Breastfeeding
- Babywearing
- Bedding close to baby
- Belief in the language value of baby's cry
- Beware of baby trainers
- Balance
Many attachment parents also choose a natural lifestyle that may include natural childbirth, homebirth, stay-at-home parenting, co-sleeping, breastfeeding, babywearing, homeschooling or unschooling, no circumcision, no or alternative-schedule childhood immunizations, holistic health practices and organic and whole foods. Attachment parenting does not require any of these practices, focusing instead on parenting tactics that support secure parent/child attachment.
