Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a class lipophilic (fat-soluble) organic compound that is used primarily as an antioxidant food additives. It is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, transformer oil and embalming fluid. BHT acts as a terminating agent that suppresses autoxidation, a process whereby unsaturated (usually) organic compounds are attacked by atmospheric oxygen.

There have been studies linking BHT to aggressive behavior and tumor growth although its use is currently approved by the FDA. Some studies have shown an increase in cancer risk and some have shown a decrease associated with BHT, but some food industries have voluntarily eliminated this additive from their products and since the 1970's, it has been steadily replaced with the less studied BHA.

BHT is also currently marketed as as a health food supplement as it has been reported to have anti-viral effects against herpes family viruses when combines with L-lysine and Vitamin C.
