Deforestation

logsDeforestation is the process of cutting or logging trees to make room for farm and pasture land or urban spaces. The term is also used to describe land that has been used for logging purposes and not replanted. Some of the ecological issues involved with deforestation are:

  • the loss of habitat for forest dwelling animals
  • reduction in carbon offset a forest can provide
  • destruction of rainforests can cause droughts in other areas
  • removing a forest can turn an area into a desert-type climate

Deforestation is most commonly happening in less developed areas like Africa and Central and South America.
