Factory farmed

Factory farmed or factory farming is the practice raising animals as commodities in high density, unhealthy environments. These practices result in environmental destruction and depletion as well as animal cruelty and health risks for both animals and humans. Antibiotics and pesticides are prevalent in the farms to halt the spread of disease and pestilence. Unfortunately the use of these chemicals allow them to enter the food chain.

According to FactoryFarm.org factory farms are not required to install high-tech sewage treatment facilities. This causes the formation of “manure lagoons.” These lagoons then are at high risk to enter the nations water supply.

In 2008, with help from the Humane Society, California passed the Animal Cruelty Act. This law was set forth to help protect animals from torture, harsh living and slaughter conditions.

Raising livestock on smaller farms by means of grass-fed or free range methods are part of the solution to factory farming.  Farmers using organic and sustainable methods are also helping in the cause to protect our environment and keep our food supply cleaner.
