Fair Trade is an alternative approach to conventional international trade which promotes social equity, economic security and sound environmental practices. Its goal is to contribute to sustainable development by empowering developing-country producers and improving market access for disadvantaged producers by raising awareness and campaigning. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variet of goods. The fair trade concept seeks to improve living standards and achieve a fairer distribution of income and influence.
The Fair Trade Labeling Organization (FLO) is the largest and most widely recognized; standard setting and certification body for labeled fair trade. The Fair Trade Certification Mark is used in over 50 countries and on dozens of different products, based on FLO’s certification for coffee, tea, rice, bananas, mangoes, cocoa, cotton, sugar, honey, fruit juices, nuts, fresh fruit, quinoa, herbs, spices, wine and other goods.
