Greenwashing

The term greenwashing was coined by environmental activists to describe the misleading efforts of corporations to describe themselves or their products or practices as environmentally responsible in order to mask or deflect their actual behavior. Advertisers routinely greenwash a variety of products and practices, including cars, energy, junk food, cleaning products, hotel water usage. Almost anything touted as "green" is likely to have some greenwashing practice attached to it, and consumers become confused as a result. In many areas, there is no clear designation overall of "green," allowing the consumer to know for sure whether they are being misled.
