Hemp is the common name for plants of the Cannabis genus but most commonly refers to industrial hemp which is used to make textiles, papers and other products. Hemp can be found in fabrics, paper, lotions and beauty care products and even plastics and fuel. Hemp is popular in green products because it grows easily without pesticides and helps to control erosion. Hemp can be used in a wide variety of ways.
- As a food - hempseed and hempseed oil are safe for human and animal consumption and can be found in a variety of health foods.
- As a fiber - hemp fiber is strong and durable and resistant to rot. Long fibers can be made into textiles and short fibers are more useful for paper and other uses.
- Hurd - the center of the stalk is high in cellulose and can be made into paper, packing materials and wood like products.
- As fuel - hemp is full of fiber and cellulose which makes it a good biomas product.
- As medicine - the high content of THC in hemp flowers and buds makes it a potentially useful (and illegal) medicine.
Henry Ford even produced a car made from stiffened hemp fiber and fueled by hemp. The only difficulty in finding hemp information is sorting some of the more wild claims by pro-marijuiana folks from the everyday useful information.
