Non-profit (NPO) is a word to describe a type of business that operates without the goal of becoming profitable. While the United States government can be defined as a non-profit, most non-profits are typically charities. Most often the organizations are founded by a group and funded by outside sources by donations big or small.
How do you become a non-profit?
Depending on the country you found a non-profit, there are different parameters in which you must work in to begin your organization. In the United States, first you must adhere to the legal guidelines dictated by the state you wish to establish the non-profit. Then you must register the non-profit. This is especially important when the non-profit must file taxes at the end of the year. The organization's non-profit status will make it exempt from most taxes depending on if the organization has a surplus (actually makes money) or not.
Famous non-profits and their founders
The largest American non-profits include the the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has a global focus. The charity strives to raise quality of life and raise health care standards globally, not just in the United Staets. The British non-profit the Welcome Trust is the world's second best founded non-profit and also focuses on health care for both people and animals worldwide.
