The official Nordic Ecolabel, the "Swan." demonstrates that a product is a good environmental choice. The Nordic Council of Ministers (from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland) introduced the Swan in 1989 to promote sustainable consumerism. To use the Nordic Ecolabel, an applicant's product must meet rigorous sustainability standards across the entire product life-cycle, from the extraction of raw materials, through manufacture, distribution, use and disposal. The Swan symbol is widely recognized by the people in the Nordic region and seen as a mark of product quality. The Nordic Ecolabel is found on products in over sixty product groups, from laundries to lubricants, from toys to tires.
The Nordic Ecolabel is recognized as one of the top tier of ecolabels. The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs mapped and analysed worldwide standards and methods used for measuring environmental sustainability of products. The study of over 200 ecolabels, product lists and databases identified a top tier of ecolabels that meet UK government purchasing standards for sustainability. The Nordic Swan, the EU Flower, Environmental Choice New Zealand (ECNZ), and Germany's Blue Angel comprise the top tier Class 1 ecolabels. Top tier ecolabels guide consumers and public and private enterprise procurement officers in purchasing products and services that are kind to the environment.
