Ocean currents

Ocean currents are affected by topography, wind, weather, polar ice caps melting, sea temperature, and the Earth's rotation. The patterns that oceans currents take on are beneficial in many ways and are crucial for the shipping and fishing industries as well as hazardous spill clean up crews.

One of the ways that ocean currents have an effect on our environment is the reduction of fuel usage in the shipping industry.  Utilizing the current as an advantage allows the ship to burn less fuel than if it were fighting a current.  Less fuel usage cuts down on the depletion of fossil fuels and the amount of emissions released.

Tidal power also takes advantage of the currents to generate electricity by harnessing the power of the tide to provide an important renewable energy resource.
