The Slow Food movement began in 1986 in Rome when Carlo Petrini staged a protest of the opening of a McDonald's near the Spanish Steps. It's now a vast non-profit organization with over 85,000 members worldwide who are commited to "counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world."
The Slow Food movement works to preserve and maintain biodiversity in food as well as the heritage of local culinary traditions and foods. Activities are designed to teach awareness as well as to celebrate local artisans, farmers, and flavors that exist throughout the world. In addition, they seek to educate consumers about the risks of fast food, factory farms, pesticides, and genetic engineering.
