A Smart Grid, through the use of digital technology, delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers in an energy and cost efficient way. Smart grid, as a term, represents the emerging vision of a digitally upgraded system of electrical transmission and distribution grids. The use of Smart grid technologies would optimize current operations, while at the same time fulfilling the promise of opening up new markets for alternative energy production. Smart grid allows for the optimization of unused portions the existing electrical generation capacity in both the long distance and local transmission networks. By incorporating advanced information and communications technology at all levels the Smart grid can help to minimize environmental impact, leading to a greener future.
In a major address to the country, President Obama outlined his economic stimulus plan and named the creation of a Smart Grid technology and clean energy as crucial factors,. Speaking at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, Obama stated that "a new smart grid ... will save us money, protect our power sources from blackout or attack, and deliver clean, alternative forms of energy to every corner of our nation." A Smart grid system could even use plug-in electric vehicles as grid storage batteries.
