Sustainability is all about being self-sufficient, self-supporting. It's about looking to the future and imagining the impact a present action will one day have. Sustainability is an all-encompassing concept that is applied in a variety of ways, including to building and development, livelihood, and environmental impact. A product, concept, strategy, or practice that is regarded as sustainable will meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
In concrete terms, the concept of sustainable invites a deep look at the effects of whatever it is that is being proposed. Want to build a house, for example? Fine, let's look at the impact on the land and the habitats contained there. Let's think about the resources used to build that house. More importantly, let's think about the future: can this new house be built in such a way that it supports itself in the future, so that impact on future generations is not only lessened but avoided entirely?
More and more we are thinking about things in terms of sustainability. Resources are quickly dwindling and new ways are developing that will take into account not only what we have to work with today but also what our children and our children's children will be working with one day in the not-too-distant future.
