Waste Stream

Where does your trash go after you throw it out?  Into the waste stream, of course!  The total flow of solid waste from homes, businesses, institutions and manufacturing plants that is recycled, burned, or disposed of in landfills is the waste stream.

The total waste stream can be divided up into segments, e.g. the "recyclable waste stream," but trash is trash is trash, and it has to go somewhere.  Waste that is burned, for example, doesn't disappear entirely since it creates carbon that adds to the atmosphere and ash that is buried, composted, added to the soil, etc, that in turn affects groundwater and soil.  Waste destined for recycling still uses resources and power to turn that old aluminum can into a new one.
