How to attract songbirds

I love the way that birdsong blends into the horn beeping, wind blowing, engine speeding, dog barking, and kid laughing ambient noises that surround my world.

I feed the birds all year round partly because I enjoy seeing them in all of their seasons. The pleasure of watching bonding pairs of cardinals, blue jays, finches and sparrows feed each other and bring their young to my feeding areas is immeasurable.

When feeding birds, both cleanliness and consistency help. I keep my eco-friendly hanging feeders, suet cages and bird tables clean by brushing or washing them free of decaying matter when I refill them. I also ground-feed in a sheltered area not prone to raptor activity, I sweep up—hose down in warm weather—bird droppings every morning before throwing down seed. Because I feed year round, I choose to feed high quality seed without hulls—much less messy!—mainly sunflower seeds and peanuts. I also provide fresh clean water, especially in winter. Solar bird bath heaters are wonderful!

I provide a variety of bird nesting boxes which I clean thoroughly in late winter. I also like to put out short bits of string, wool and fabric scraps for the birds to use as nest material.

Sound like too much work? It really is a cinch when you get into a routine. Besides you have the added bonus of getting to take lots of up-close and personal photos to post in our brand new Super Eco group on flickr!

February will be 'For The Birds' month on Super Eco's flickr group. More information coming soon...

Oh there is no way I could feed the birds hull less seeds !! Too many feeders, too many birds
Some people think that you should not feed the birds because they are not learning to feed appropriate to their circumstances, to their natural food but nowadays with habitat destruction and most especially in urban areas, most birds cannot get enough to eat and resort to a certain amount of scavenging.....
Did not know about the group, will look into it !
