How to green cooling and heating efficiency

With the summer season fast approaching it is time to get your summer cooling strategy in order. Here are some simple handy dandy tips for making our homes a little bit greener and more energy efficient.

  1. What a revelation getting an electronic programmable thermostat was for my husband and me. No more scrapping about control of our ancient mercury thermostats—and we had  a lower heating bill this past winter. We agreed on temperature settings and did not have to think about it all winter. Sweet harmony reigned and even our Boston Terrier Max was impressed! A programmable thermostat will have the same effect in hot weather.
  2. Eco friendly black out blinds can insulate for heat loss in winter and keep the sun at bay while improving your air-conditioning efficiency in summer.
  3. Ceiling fans push warm air down from the ceiling in winter and when blades are reversed to pull air upward, they can lessen the need for air conditioning in summer—remember to keep those fan blades clean for reduced allergen spreading and energy efficiency—you can purchase EnergyStar rated fans in many styles.
  4. Maintain your heating and cooling system by having your units cleaned and tuned yearly. Vacuum your heating and cooling outlet vents and clean or change filters regularly.
  5. Set your heating and cooling temps back when you are going to be away for an extended block of time—bringing the temp up or down uses less energy than having it crank all day while you are away.
Kick back and enjoy a cup of fair trade iced tea!
