Even if there's a little less green in your bank account these days, you can still help the planet by greening your banking practices. It only takes a few easy and quick steps and you'll be doing your part by reducing waste and resources and making your environmental footprint just a little smaller. Every little effort adds up to big changes when we all work together!
1. Bank local. Local banks are friendlier and provide better service than huge banks, and you're helping your local economy by putting your faith—not to mention your money—in these local enterprises rather than banking with the big boys. Worried about solvency? Check your bank's stats here and here.
2. Get direct deposit. Nag your employer to set up direct deposit for your paycheck right into your account. You'll cut down on paper AND trips to the bank.
3. Pay bills online. It's easy and quick and reduces the need to write paper checks, mail paper checks, and have the businesses deal with your paper checks. Use electronic payments whenever you can, and set up automatic payments for recurring items like your rent, mortgage, or car. You'll reduce your footprint even more by having to be online less. Worried about security? Read about safe internet banking here.
4. Get e-statements. Your bank will be glad to reduce their own paper load and mailing costs by sending you an e-statement every month.
