How to green your dog's toys

Not so long ago (Christmas), in a galaxy not so far away (our house), a little boy (dog) named Max got a stocking full of green, eco-friendly toys. He got: Maggie the pink caterpillar, Lenny the grey lizard, Naru the knitted monkey, Wally the ring bear and Pucci the Pug. I know what you're thinking—yes, he is very spoiled! Max is a real toy boy, and he needs his exercise and is really quite good about never chewing anything but his very own toys (lucky us).

With all of the bad news about the amount of toxic substances and lead paint being used in the manufacture of children's and pet's toys, we wanted to provide Max with some safe green alternatives. There are more and more companies like Simply Fido, A Cheerful Pet, Earth Dog, Planet Dog and West Paw whose mission and focus it is to provide safe fun, healthy options for dog and cat play. The organic, earth friendly and recycled dog toys that we have purchased are very well made and tend to be a bit more expensive—but so are vet bills and we feel that our little pup (he's 13) is worth the investment.

So picture this: while relaxing on his Big Shrimpy bed, munching on a Heidi's Homemade organic peanut butter cookie, Max is trying to decide which of his brand new eco-crew he will try and get me to throw for him. Oh, for a dog's life!

I knew a dog who would rip apart a stuffed toy in about 30 seconds. What a waste! Max looks like he regards his toys as beloved friends...
