Growing herbs is much easier than you might think; in fact, herbs are one of the easiest plants to grow. Here are the tips we found:
Growing herbs indoors
All you need is a sunny window (south-facing if possible), small pots and seeds and you're set. Herbs to grow indoors include basil, oregano, parsley, and tarragon. You may wish to start them in peat pots and then re-pot as necessary. Complete planting and indoor garden setup instructions, as well as an extensive reference for growing herbs indoors, can be found here. High Mowing has a nice selection of organic herb seeds, as does ESP Seeds. Feeling adventurous? Get your medicinal herb seeds at Mountain Rose.
Growing herbs outdoors
Here you can go wild! Herb plants make great additions to your flower garden or vegetable garden (or both!), and many herbs (notably rosemary, thyme, and chives) take little or no care. A good list of herbs to grow for beginners includes rosemary, sage, sweet basil, dill, mint, sweet marjoram, tarragon, thyme, chives, parsley (do contain your mint, though, unless you'd like it to take over your garden). Tips on growing herbs outdoors can be found here. Many herbs overwinter nicely, depending on your climate. You can use them fresh or dry them for use throughout the winter. Want to take them indoors again? It's not that hard.
Herbs are forgiving and easy to grow; why not start yours now? Ready, set, grow!
