How to plan summer backyard fun

Can you feel it in the air? Spring is on the way, summer will be hot on her heels and it is never too early to begin to plan your backyard kid cool down strategy!

These days, more and more, we are being made aware of the many environmental hazards that our children are exposed to daily. It is so important for green minded folks to begin to redefine fun and provide eco friendly alternatives for their children.

Air pollution emanating from chlorinated indoor swimming pools can be harmful to your child's lungs and may be related to the elevated incidence of asthma in wealthy western countries, according to the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists. The huge environmental impact of large outdoor pools is clear as well.

Evidently, there is really no good news for the planet, or your child, when it comes to backyard kiddie pools either, except maybe purchasing a used hard plastic one—somewhat offgassed already—from a garage sale.

Your best bet may be the old fashioned approach, which enables you to cool down your kids and pets while watering your lawn and garden, by using your backyard hose—a handy dandy drinking safe version of course—and a water conserving sprinkler. Throw in some great safe, waterproof green toys and your kids will do the rest!

Those trips to the lake, pond or seaside may provide your family with the greenest swim options.

Happy planning!

yipes, that really bites about the dangers of both the over chlorinated air of indoor pools and the dangerous out-gassing of outdoor vinyl pools. i'm surprised that no one has come up with a greener alternative for controlled cooling for kids in the summer. where are the green entrepreneurs when you need them?!
