I have a confession to make. Even though I’ve been living a mainly-organic eco-friendly lifestyle for years, until yesterday I had yet to ever buy a truly organic shampoo. Call me vain, but I’m a fanatic, er, particular, about my hair. And I didn’t think that organic shampoos could measure up to the chemical-laden internet-only uber-special brand of shampoo that has been making my hair look awesome for years.
But I recently moved from Pennsylvania to Canada, and something about borders and customs, extra shipping costs, and the desire to really walk the buy-locally walk made me decide to forego another order from New York and seek out a hair product I could find locally that would be just as awesome for my hair. Nay, even better!
I also wanted to really feel good about what was going on my hair. I love the idea that you should think twice about putting anything on your body that you wouldn’t eat, so a look at the ingredients list of the shampoos in my local natural-food store (a short walk or bike ride away = points!) was my first concern.
I’m a sensory-type person, so I ended up choosing a product based on smell. Yep, I picked the one that smelled best. Is that weird? It’s a Dr. Hauschka shampoo—Apricot and Sea Buckthorn, doesn't that sound delicious?—and the familiar name (I’ve used their skin care products but never knew they made shampoos as well!) was comforting. And this morning I tried it. Smelled good, made my hair feel good, and it totally looks awesome. I’m hooked. And the price wasn’t any more than my uber-special mail-order shampoo, when you factor in shipping. Yeah, I’m sold.
Other organic shampoos I’ve tried:
Jessicurl: awesome! Made from natural ingredients, not tested on animals, but not available locally to me. If you’re in the U.S, though, and have curly hair (or even if you don’t!), this is an wonderful line.
Lush: I so wanted to love these shampoos but I don’t. I adore their other products, though. Many are organic, and they avoid animal testing, so check them out. You may love them!
Avalon Organics: I bought their facial cleanser while in a pinch while traveling and I love it. The shampoo’s okay, but my curly hair needs special attention.
