Excuse my potty mouth, but toilets are spinning a little out of control, and I'm not just talking about wasted water and antiquated plumbing. Let's see, Japan's famous woshurettos roasty toast your hiney, power wash your, er, tenders, blow dry and even deodorize (ew!) 'em too. Even creepier, a new breed of toilets, also from tech-obsessed Japan, come equipped with medical-grade gadgets and sensors that instantly spit out squatters' urine blood sugar levels, pulse, blood pressure and body fat percentage, all neatly packaged and ready for upload to your wireless device—just don't drop it in the toilet.
For a cool $5,000, the water-conserving Toto Neorest 600 neutralizes stinkage with a built-in catalytic deodorizer. One button's for tinkle. The other, for, well, heavier deposits. And there's no handle jiggling, thanks to a wireless Wii controller-like remote. Need a little musical inspiration? Toto's got your butt covered with 18 green audio alternatives to the trickle of wasted tap water. Ocean waves and smooth jazz not "moving" enough? No prob. Just plug in your own SD memory card.
Toilets still not sexy enough for you? Yes, "sexy," is the word Jack Sim, founder of the Singapore-based World Toilet Organization, wants to spring to mind every time you flush, something some 2.6 billion people worldwide don't have the opportunity, nor the facilities, to do. To provide them with basic sanitation, some 500 million commodes are needed. But are they wanted?
"A lot of people who defecate in the open don't yet see the need to have a toilet, because they have been doing it for generations," Sim reported on Nov. 19, which happened to be World Toilet Day. Who knew? Sim's answer to creating can demand? Make toilets "sexy status symbols," like cars, cell phones and flat screens. "People are by nature 'status seeking,' so, instead of building drab and dingy toilets, we need to make them colorful and vibrant." Think iPod with in an extra "o" and a killer potty, I mean, party shuffle.
