ThisWay bike uses solar power

I often think the major reason that more people don't seek out more eco-friendly means of transportation is because they don't want to appear too conspicuous. Let's face it, as great as Smart Cars are, they do invite attention.

Something tells me that this will be the major challenge facing the ThisWay Bicycle, though it comes with plenty of perks, including solar-powered front and rear LED lights and a roof to protect against harsh weather. The bike has just won Bicycle Design's "Commuter Bike for the Masses" competition, and designer Torkel Dohmer is receiving a 2008 Cannondale Bad Boy 700 as a prize.

The bike is lightweight, with an adjustable seat that will fit most body types. It truly does look like an ideal transport for the short-distance commuter. I see two main hurdles for the ThisWay to overcome, however, if it wants to break into the mainstream:

  1. It'll be expensive. The solar panels will certainly increase the cost among competing bicycles, though the cost of running and maintaining it pale in comparison to a traditional car.
  2. It looks like it came out of Blade Runner or something. I'm not sure I want to feel like I'm getting on Disneyland's People Mover every time I head out to Starbucks.

Other than that, there's little not to like about the ThisWay. It's clean, light and effective. It could also be great to take out for a ride alongside your eco-trike. Does it have a chance to win mainstream approval, though?
