Tired of paying exorbitant prices for bundled fresh herbs from the grocery store? Want herbs that are, by definition, fresh and local? It's surprisingly simple, with just a little gardening knowledge, to grow your own.
The first thing you'll have to decide is which herbs to grow, depending primarily on your taste preference and seasonal variability. West Virginia University has a great guide for beginning gardeners. Rosemary and sage are both strong-flavored herbs, but milder herbs like basil, mint and tarragon are easy to plant and maintain as well.
They also recommend keeping annual and perennial herbs separate and planting in well-drained soil, as wet soil is the least hospitable to herb growing. Planet Green advises to keep basil and oregano in warm, sunny areas, whereas parsley should be planted in early spring as it takes longer to germinate.
Here's a brief list of popular herbs and their health benefits:
- Basil: Rich in Vitamin K and acts as a potent anti-inflammatory
- Parsley: Contains antioxidants; promotes strong immune and heart function
- Rosemary: Improves circulation and can help prevent asthma attacks
- Thyme: Promotes healthy cell function; a good source of flavonoids.
- Oregano: Prohibitis bacterial growth; a good source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids
