What are you doing tomorrow? If you're in the Washington DC area at about 1 pm you might want to take part in what's likely to be the largest act of environmental civil disobedience in U.S. history: tomorrow's Capitol Climate Action at the coal-fired Capitol Power Plant. Thousands of earth-loving activists (big names and small) from around the country and beyond plan to dress up and stage a peaceful demonstration showing their commitment to getting the country's government to move to a clean energy economy that will "protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future."
The action is the result of a coalition of more than 90 groups from around the country who are urging leaders to take action to help slow or end human-caused climate change. The demonstrators plan to peaceably block access to the plant for the day and are asking everyone attending to adhere to a list of action guidelines that include promoting a tone of respect and honesty, complete non-violence, and refraining from damaging or destroying property. Participation in non-violence training beforehand is encouraged. Organizers do expect arrests, however.
Um, arrests?
This feels a little like the energy of the protests in the 60's, only with blogging (and a texting loop for participants). Can real change be far behind?
If you go tomorrow, drop us a line, will you? And thanks.
