Celebrating Pi Day in an eco way

This weekend we're celebrating what might be the Nerd National Holiday, Pi Day. On 3/14 anyone with an interest in irrational numbers or geometry is welcome to share a little Pi(e). People have been making pies all week in anticipation.  Many of their efforts have been shared on the Internet at the ScienceBlogs Pi Day Pie Contest.

Janet Stemwedel serves up some delicious recipes and a few pie charts.

An eco-friendly entry comes from Zuska, the blogger who is also known as Suzanne E, Franks. Zuska prepared a "Bird Pie" in honor of the occasion. For any PETAphiles who may be reading this, there is no cause for alarm. The Bird Pie was not some vegetarian nightmare with blackbirds baked in.

Zuska's recipe calls for a recycled plastic plate of some sort, the kind of useless thing you have in your kitchen but can't bear to throw away, sunflower seeds, shelled seed and dried berry mix, and a rock. She says,

The Bird Pie Dish will tend to go airborne and scuttle down the length of your driveway with the slightest breeze, so you will need 1 rock. Preferably, an attractive, interesting sort of rock. Place said rock in the center of the Bird Pie Dish.

Now, take a handful or two of black oil sunflower seed and arrange in two wedges on opposite sides of the rock. Take a handful or two of shelled-seed-and-dried-berry mix and also arrange in opposite wedges.

That's all there is to it. Now put it near your bird feeder and hope that the birds arrive before the squirrels.

How did you celebrate Pi Day?

I tried to explain pi to my almost 4 year old. She took it in stride and then asked if I knew where the Easter Bunny lived.
