Flick off your lights for Earth Hour

Your light switch is your vote to fight global warming during Earth Hour. At 8:30 p.m. local time this Saturday, March 28, households and business all over the world will flick off their lights for an hour in a show of support for efforts to counteract global warming.

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as more than 2 million homes and organizations blacked out for an hour. Last year, the event grew to a worldwide sustainability event. This year, the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) is urging people across the globe to vote with their light switches during Earth Hour for a target of 1 billion votes, to be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

What could you do with a lights-free prime time weekend evening hour? If enough people in your area participate, you could get a better shot at star-gazing. Curl up on the couch and enjoy candlelight (or firelight, if it's still cold where you live), hot chocolate and board games or storytelling. Or if spring fever has injected you with a healthy dose of playful energy, organize a treasure hunt in the dark—a delightful romp with the kids, or an intriguing idea for an inventive couple.

Share Earth Hour with long-distance friends by signing up on Facebook. (You're already connected with Super Eco at Facebook, right?) Help us send a message in support of efforts to fight global warming—vote with your light switch this weekend!

Scrabble by candlelight is our power-out entertainment favorite.

What would be better for global warming than an hour demonstration is
turning off the darn lights when you leave a room. Turn off the TV and computers when you aren't using them. Keep your freezers full, wash your dishes with a full load, wear those jeans one more time before running the washing machine, hang those sheets out on the line to dry....... It is ALWAYS more efficient to save energy than it is to generate and distribute it, no matter how green the source. Drives me crazy when the grandkids come to visit, to see every darn light in the house left on.

Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers. Check it out at www.commit21.com
