It's not only your fitness that's sinking along with that elevator you just hopped aboard—it could be your green cred, too. Here, our top 10 reasons to take the stairs.
- Lose weight, gain health. This man lost 145 pounds by choosing the stairs.
- Dodge the boss. Trust us—you won't find the suits in the stairwell.
- No making a scene. When was the last time the stairs got stuck and you had to ring that embarrassing bell? Exactly.
- No SBDs. 'Nuff said.
- Lower your carbon footprint. It takes energy to run an elevator—so skip it.
- Discover long-lost treasure. Ok, maybe just loose change and ink pens—but that's recycling, right?
- Beat the rush. Stairwells are typically located next to building exits. You're out before the herd even hits the lobby.
- No need to wait. Ever see anyone waiting to merge into the stairwell traffic?
- Train for that trip to Europe. You'll be huffing it up if you're not used to hoofing it.
- Never out of order. Well, we guess you could get overzealous and blow out a knee or something—but come on, show off your green super-strength!

I like taking the stairs as it's a quick reminder of what goes up much come down. Each step I take, I obsess over the energy my legs are consuming just to lift my butt up another few inches and it helps keep in the fore-front the energy required to do anything, kinetic or not.
Another good reminder, when using the stairs with a child: slow down and look around -- the view's great from up high!
For walking try using the stairs during the day at work, walk to shops instead of using public transportation or the car. Keep it at the top of your mind and next time use the stairs instead of the escalator.Because Walking or Jogging is the best exercise for joint and cardio resistance.
