Why wasn't Earth Day a holiday?

It could hardly have escaped your attention that yesterday was Earth Day. Scroll down a bit and you'll see plenty of Earth Day related posts here at Super Eco (as well as all around the 'net), and maybe you scored some great Earth Day freebies.

So ... that's it with Earth Day?

There were plenty of great activities going on, opportunities to connect with fellow greenies and bring more awareness to the various environmental plights around the globe. But to participate, you would have had to take a day off from work.

So what if we all had the day off for Earth Day? And it was a day where we could really make a difference, since so many more of us would be able to actually participate? Earth Day is now observed each year by more than 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries, so we should make it a priority by making it a federal holiday.

Oh sure, there are economic costs to holidays. That goes without saying and would have to be factored in, but wouldn't the net benefit be potentially much greater? We could spend the day planting community veggie gardens, or having a big neighborhood "stuff" exchange, building sustainable shelters for community homeless, or ... well, you get the idea. The power is in numbers, and together we could all have a huge impact on our communities and as a result impact the planet.

If you like the idea, take it up with your congressional representative. We'll be rooting for you, for all of us.
