5 DIY greenhouse ideas

Sure, it's probably warmed up where you live. Your garden looks great and those seeds you planted last month (or even got a jumpstart on indoors) have sprouted and are getting taller almost by the hour. You're not even thinking about greenhouses, not with all this sun and great gardening weather!

Except now is the perfect time to build your greenhouse, and not just for next year. Extend your growing season well into the fall by getting your greenhouse ready now—not when the autumn winds have set in and your fingers turn blue.

Here are five easy, cheap, and eco-friendly greenhouses you can make in a weekend.

1. Recycled Plastic Bottle Greenhouse. Instructions start with "Get 1500 2-liter bottles," but what you do with them to create this ingenious upcycled greenhouse is easier than it sounds.

2. Under $25 Greenhouse. We recommend using something eco-friendlier than PVC, but these are great easy-to-follow plans.

3. Low-Watt LED Greenhouse. Live in a really cold climate, like Finland or Yellowknife, Canada? Then this is the greenhouse for you. Plus the video is only a little like "Fargo."

4. Recycled Storm Door Greenhouse. Are you handy? People give this stuff away. Also works with old windows.

5. Lumber Frame Greenhouse. It's eco-friendly if you've scored some old 2x4's and you need a project. Looks pretty awesome though.

Also check out this list of useful stuff to know about building greenhouses, like where to site them, natural pest control, etc. And if you can stand the sound of this man's voice, this video is useful too.

P.S. If you bail on the DIY thing, never fear: there are easy and inexpensive greenhouse kits that'll have you up and runnng in no time.
