Focusing brainpower with ayurvedic herbs

Fall weather simply begs for curling up on the couch with a snuggly blanket, a thick paperback, a steaming mug of something rich and comforting, and a willingness to lose track of time (and consciousness). Of course, if you suffer from trouble winding down for a good night's rest, the scenario may be closer to an exhausted collapse during what should be the peak of a productive day.

If your upcoming holiday schedule bears any resemblance to mine—relatives from every time zone snoozing on every couch, spare bed and peaceful corner—you'll want to make sure you're well-rested beforehand. I've been trying something new to help quiet the wheels inside my brain long enough for me to relax, and by jove, I think I may be onto something! Ayurvedic (that's traditional Indian medicine) herbal supplements called adaptogens propose to increase your body's resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue. I've been sampling two different supplements from Organix-South, Sleep Ease and Stress Ease. Both purport to have non-sedative effects that take the edge off stress, balance burnout and combat brain fog—oh, and they help you relax enough to get to sleep, too. You can even take both supplements in a complementary fashion.

Is it the placebo effect, or do these supplements really pack a punch? After reviewing the ingredients (EcoCert certified organic herbs and vegetarian capsules), I'm not so sure that it matters. A review of research doesn't turn up anything that would raise any eyebrows. Manufacturing and production standards appear impeccable. The company itself demonstrates admirable social responsibility. The fact that taking the supplements gives me a proactive way to take care of myself may be the key ... It's food for thought, and my brain is certainly feeling fed.

I think I'm going to have to sleep on it.
