Al Gore

Al Gore is more famous for his work after having lost the 2000 Presidential election than his chance at the presidency or the prior eight years serving as the 45th U.S. Vice President under Bill Clinton. He starred in the 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which won an Academy Award and was the impetus for Gore's receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Albert Gore Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., son to Albert Gore Sr., a U.S. Representative and Senator from Tennessee between 1939 and 1971. After having spent his childhood divided between Washington and Carthage, Tennessee, he earned his BA degree with a major in government from Harvard in 1969, and shortly thereafter volunteered for the U.S. Army to serve in the Vietnam War.

Though he seemed destined for a life of politics, Al was "dispirited" upon his return from Vietnam, enrolling in the Vanderbilt University Divinity School and working as a journalist for The Tennessean. However, once he learned his father's former seat in the House of Representatives was about to be vacated in 1976, he ran for office, winning at the age of 26 and serving for eight years in the House and another nine years in the Senate. He and his wife, Tipper, had three children in that time, and in 1992, he was selected as the vice presidential candidate on Bill Clinton's presidential ticket.

In 2000, Al Gore won the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidential election, running against George W. Bush. The election was extremely close, and the popular vote in Florida was a near-tie, spurring a recount and an eventual Supreme Court battle that lasted until December 12, 2000. Many pundits believe that the justices decided wrongly, but on December 13, Gore conceded the election to Bush and ended his political career.

The release of the film An Inconvenient Truth in 2006 gave new life to Al Gore's popularity as an environmental thought leader and helped invigorate many of his followers who continue to encourage Gore to run for President again, although he has made no indication that he ever plans to run for President again.

Notable Eco Activity

Al Gore began his public work as an environmental activist in 1992, when his book Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit was published. In it, he suggests global policies which might address the worlds ecological problems. After his career in politics ended, in 2004, he co-launched Generation Investment Management, "a new London fund management firm that plans to create environment-friendly portfolios ... [and] will manage assets of institutional investors, such as pension funds, foundations and endowments, as well as those of 'high net worth individuals,' from offices in London and Washington, D.C." Two years later, he founded The Alliance for Climate Protection and starred in the documentary film An Inconvenient Truth. After winning the Academy Award for Documentary Feature he gave a speech, stating: "My fellow Americans, people all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis. It's not a political issue; it's a moral issue. We have everything we need to get started, with the possible exception of the will to act. That's a renewable resource. Let's renew it."

His greatest achievement was in 2007, when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, shared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
