David Attenborough

Sir David Attenborough is Britain's most highly regarded and well known natural history film maker. He is the author of dozens of books, has narrated scores of television broadcasts, and appeared in countless films and videos about nature. The BBC calls him "the world's leading natural history programme maker," citing his Life on Earth (1979), The Living Planet (1984), The Trials of Life (1990), The Private Life of Plants (1995), The Life of Birds (1998), The Life of Mammals (2002) and Life in the Undergrowth (2005) series'. Attenborough recently finished the capstone of this documentary survey of life on the planet Earth, Life in Cold Blood (2008), a five part series about reptiles and amphibians.

He joined the BBC in 1950 as a trainee producer and has—since then, save for a three year stint in network management—written, produced, narrated or presented natural history documentaries. Attenborough's masterful grasp of evolutionary principles has made him a confirmed agnostic. He is a Patron of the World Land Trust and a strong supporter of the WWF (formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund). He is quite outspoken in defense of the environment. He considers climate change to be the major challenge facing the world.

Notable Eco Activity

Sir David Attenborough has brought his influence to bear on the problem of global climate change through his role as WWF ambassador. He works actively to halt the slide toward extinction of many of the birds and animals that share the planet. For example, in 2005 he was the force behind organizing the Save the Albatross campaign, an advocacy effort to raise public awareness of the problems facing the bird, and to chnage policies and regulations to protect albatrosses from death at the hands of fishing practices.

Attenborough's environmental interests and causes range from Butterfly Conservation to Borneo rainforest preservation.
