Dr. David Harper is an ecology and conservation biologist at the University of Leicester whose decades of study of flamingos in Kenya, at the Lake Bogoria National Reserve Ramsar have led to his open criticism of the Kenyan horticultural industry, especially the growth and sale of roses for Valentine's Day and other winter holidays. He is a senior lecturer in the biology department at the University of Leicester, and has been leading teams of ecologists to study Rift Valley lakes for over 25 year. He works with the Earthwatch Institute and has received funding as part of the British government's Darwin Initiative.
Notable Eco Activity
In 2009, Dr. David Harper called for British consumers to purchase fair-trade roses produced by conscientious companies, with a transparent supply chain, because of the deleterious effects of the commercial horticulture industry on Lake Naivasha in Kenya, saying the export of low-cost roses was "bleeding that country dry" and especially harming the habitat for flamingos, grebes, and other native water birds.
